Many people are told their weight gain is a thyroid issue because their TSH is checked. But in perimenopause, the more common problem is an estrogen–progesterone imbalance.

• Progesterone drops in perimenopause
• Estrogen becomes dominant when progesterone is low
• Estrogen promotes fat storage—especially belly, hips, and thighs
• Your thyroid may be functioning perfectly while the estrogen/progesterone ratio is off
• TSH only tells you about thyroid status, not hormone balance
• If you only test TSH, you can miss the real driver and end up with the wrong approach
• Saliva testing may help provide clearer insight into estrogen/progesterone balance

If you’ve only had TSH checked, consider asking for a hormone balance conversation—what tests have you done?
